Curbside Management for Cities and Municipalities

Dynamic Use of Curbside Areas
Curbs are central spaces in urban traffic, used differently by vehicles, bicycles, and pedestrians depending on the time of day. Current regulations are mostly static, defined by signs, but short-term double-parking shows the limits of this approach.
Real-Time Monitoring
Fraunhofer FOKUS develops a curbside screening solution that combines multiple data sources to capture curbside usage accurately:
- existing street and lamppost sensors
- smartphones of road users
- connected vehicle fleets
- a dedicated app for vehicles such as buses or waste collection trucks
The data is processed in a privacy-compliant way to create a real-time situational picture, optimizing curbside usage and preventing misuse.
Goal: Flexible Stopping Zones
In the future, road users will be able to book free time slots for curbside areas via an app. Illegally parked vehicles are detected anonymously and can be reported to authorities without sharing license plate numbers.
