Bicycle app for clean air, green light advisory, and safe routes
With the Clean Air app, Fraunhofer FOKUS has developed an application that calculates comfortable bicycle routes for cyclists throughout the city of Berlin according to their individual preferences and navigates them along these routes. Currently, users can choose between the fastest route, a particularly safe route that avoids accident blackspots, and a route with the lowest air pollution. During the ride, the innovative traffic light phase assistant at over 500 traffic lights ensures that the green phase can be reached comfortably with individual speed advisories. We utilize the speed and meter-accurate distance to the traffic light for the calculations.

The route calculation is based on both static and highly current dynamic information, with our Digital Urban Twin serving as the foundation using publicly available and other data. This includes:
- Detailed map data (OpenStreetMap Foundation and community)
- Intersection topologies and traffic light phases accurate to the second (Miovision GmbH)
- Construction sites and road closures (Verkehrsinformationszentrale Berlin)
- Air pollution forecast (INWT FairQ, Verkehrsinformationszentrale Berlin)
- Accident atlas (Statistische Ämter des Bundes und der Länder)
Although the Clean Air app was primarily developed and tested for cyclists, it is equally suitable for motorists who want individual, safe routes.
