Bike navigation app for clean air, green light advisory, and safe routes
With the Bike Navigation App, Fraunhofer FOKUS has developed an innovative navigation application that offers cyclists throughout the city of Berlin comfortable, safe, and health-conscious routes. The app calculates individual bicycle routes based on personal preferences and reliably navigates along the chosen path. The following route options are available:
- the safest route: based on our safety index for bicycles and avoiding accident hotspots
- the route with the lowest air pollution: taking into account air quality along the route
- the fastest route: considering the quality of the road surface
During the ride, the traffic light phase assistant at over 500 traffic lights additionally supports users. It provides individual speed recommendations to reach the next green phase as comfortably as possible and without unnecessary stops. The basis for this includes the current riding speed as well as the meter-accurate distance to the traffic light.
Data Sources
The route calculation is based on both static and highly current dynamic information, with our Digital Urban Twin serving as the foundation using our and publicly available data. This includes:
- Detailed map data (OpenStreetMap Foundation and community)
- Intersection topologies and traffic light phases accurate to the second (Miovision GmbH)
- Construction sites and road closures (Verkehrsinformationszentrale Berlin)
- Air pollution forecast (INWT FairQ, Verkehrsinformationszentrale Berlin)
- Accident atlas (Statistische Ämter des Bundes und der Länder)

The app is currently in an intensive public beta phase. You can download it from the Google Play Store or join the public beta on iOS via TestFlight.
Although the Bike Navigation App was primarily developed and tested for cyclists, it is equally suitable for motorists who value individual, safe, and data-driven route guidance.
